Encountering The Python

What is Python?

As per Wikipedia “Python is a widely used high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language.” Python is an open source programming language which was conceived in the late 1980s and its implementation began in December 1989 by Guido van Rossum (more on it here).

What kind of programing language?

To give a better idea let's look at the below mentioned summary-
  • High level language - Python is a high-level language because it provides strong “abstraction”.
  • Interpreted - Python is an Interpreted language because it does not run on a compiler.
  • Dynamically typed language - Python is dynamically typed because in python every variable is bound to an object.

Why should I learn Python?

Python is a very powerful programming language, secondly it's easier to learn and since it's interpreted language the code is easier to understand. Lastly there is a huge community supporting Python so if you get stuck anywhere lot's of help are available out there.

Python as a language is very interesting since it can be used as a acripting language as well as a programming language complete with classes, objects variables and the works.

Python basics

The first basic thing that we can learn to do in Python is calculations, yes like other programming languages python is also very capable of handling numbers as small as 0 to as large as 100000 and more. So, using python as a calculator is an obvious choice to get started. Consider the below example-
>>> 2+24>>> 2 * (5-6)-2

In the above example what we did was that we calculated the sum of 2 and 2 and we did a multiplication of 2 with the sum of 5 & 6. We can also assign these numbers to some variables as shown in below example -

>>> var1 = 2
>>> var2 = 2

>>> tot = var1+var2

>>> tot
4
What we did above is that we assigned the variable "var1" to a number 2 and the variable "var2" again to a number 2, then we calculated the sum and assigned the result to a variable "tot".

This is how we can use python to carry out basic mathematical operations and we can use variables to store the numbers and the results of the mathematical operations. All the above examples just scratches the ability of python as a programming language but there's more to it and there's more to learn.
